A perfect example here

Guild Wars 2 offers quite a few unique mechanics and one of those can be found in how the game handles normal questing and rewards. Instead of hordes of NPCs with question marks floating over their heads, Guild Wars 2 has a more centralized system of questing known as Renown with rewards in the form of Karma. To fully explain these mechanics, Guild Wars 2 Hub offers this intro guide to Renown and Karma.

Renown

We’re all used to the standard MMO fare of grabbing quests from multitudes of NPCs in an area and then running off to do them. Guild Wars 2 handles this aspect in a different way. Instead of multiple NPCs that give quests, there are a handful of fixed locations in every zone that are known as Renown Hearts.

These are marked by heart-shaped icons on your map and will be highlighted by any scouts (people marked with the telescope icon) you interact with, along with what is need to complete each Renown Heart and its level. Each Renown Heart is associated with a specific NPC (those with hearts floating over them), and those NPCs will ask the players to help them. However, a player does not need to talk to the NPC to get the quest as just moving into the area will have it automatically show up on your screen.

To help a Renown NPC in Guild Wars 2, the player will need to perform a variety of tasks. Being able to fulfill a quest by different means is a refreshing change from the typical MMO. In the image below, you can see that I’m involved in helping Farmer Diah. The various ways that I can help her are shown along with a bar showing how much I’ve completed for this Renown task.

You will build up life force in the following ways:

  1. Whenever a nearby enemy creature or player is defeated
  2. Through active use of certain weapon or utility skills (listed below)
  3. Through the passive state of the Signet of Undeath utility skill

You will typically build up life force very quickly while participating in dynamic events that involve defeating creatures. You can take advantage of this fact at lower levels to both unlock your death shroud skills, and get into the habit of entering and exiting death shroud in combat.

Once you enter death shroud, your available life force will slowly deplete naturally, and incoming damage will reduce your life force instead of your health. The latter helps make the necromancer one of the most resilient professions in GW2, so the faster you can build life force, the greater your survivability will be.

To increase the rate at which you generate life force, there are a number of skills that you will want to consider working into your build. These are listed below along with notes on the amount of life force gained, and the base recharge time for each skill.

The RuneScape Team

Following the grand release of Evolution of Combat, I have the perfect complement now in store: Brutal Weapons!

Indeed, a single glance at any weapon in this new collection of overrides confirms their brutal nature. Littered with razor-sharp spikes to deal tremendous levels of pain to whomever should get in your way, they are the supreme addition for the dual wielding adventurer, or any aficionado of one-handed weaponry.

Why not have a crack of the Brutal Whip? Its rusty spikes are designed solely with the intention of delivering the most vicious of lashes. Likewise, the Brutal Longsword is hefty, rusting, and capable of incredibly swift yet painful kills.

Behind the Scenes: December

As with any Grandmaster quest, the rewards are particularly awesome. Not only are the XP rewards some of the biggest we have ever awarded, we’ll allow you to smith obsidian armour (particularly useful when fighting volcano-dwelling critters), and unlock a brand new single-player combat training area.

Requirements for the quest are as follows:

  • 80 Defence
  • 80 Smithing
  • 72 Mining
  • The Elder Kiln

If your allegiance tends towards the TokHaar, Solomon will have three tiers of cosmetic armour reskins for sale, based on the ancient race.

Player-Owned Ports – Members Only

I first mentioned the idea of Player-Owned Ports at Runefest last year, and it’s something we’ve been working hard on ever since. This month, after months of plank-walking, kraken-dodging and sail-hoisting, it’ll be ready! Arrrr! That it be!

Player-Owned Ports is a massive minigame where you can build and manage the port, your ships and your crewmen – ships, sailors, captains and adventurers – and explore the realm of the Eastern Lands!

Building the port itself is a simple matter of creating and upgrading buildings by using the resources your pirates traders bring back from their exotic adventures. The better your port, the better the shipmates you attract to your fleet. The strategy lies in equipping and preparing your ships for any eventuality, finding the right crew for the job and choosing the right voyages to undertake. And there are HUNDREDS of voyages that occur in real-time, meaning you can go back to the surface world and go about your normal business while your crew do all the hard work.

Accessing the port requires at least level 90 in one of the following skills: Herblore, Prayer, Runecrafting, Thieving, Slayer or Fishing. Each skill attracts a different adventurer, who has their own deep, mysterious storyline to investigate, unlocking more and more of the fabled Eastern Lands. If you want to explore ALL of the content that the ports can offer, you’ll need at least level 90 in all of those skills.

There are heaps of new rewards to be accessed as your crew brings back the rare and elusive items of the eastern archipelagos. There are so many rewards, in fact, that we can only give a taster here:

  • New level 85 equipment for rangers, mages and warriors. These need to be crafted, runecrafted or smithed by players with 90+ in those skills
  • A brand new, ‘highest-healing-ever’ food type (90+ Cooking to cook)
  • New scrimshaw items that can be carried in a brand new ‘pocket’ slot, offering a range of skilling and combat benefits (90+ Fletching to make).

Of course, no update would be complete without some fantastic new graphics and audio, and the ports have those by the barrel load! Not only is it fully voiced and features some fantastic shanties (look out for a special shanty in an up-and-coming video) but the Graphics team have really pushed the boat out with some amazing buildings, ships and characters, all of which really bring the update to life.

Solomon will also be opening Davy Jones’ Locker to reveal various sailor outfits (east and west) and nautical hairstyles and beards.

A Stray in a Manger – Free and Members

The poor old Varrock dog has had it bad for the last few years, and this Christmas you’ll have the chance to turn his flea-bitten, mangy life around! In a special update more akin to the Christmas events of old, you’ll be able to clean up a pack of stray dogs, build a permanent kennel in your choice of RuneScape city, and turn the dogs into a pack of Christmas reindeer, all geared up to help with Pet Christmas.

You’ll also be able to hunt special Christmas snow implings around the game world, gaining plenty of stocking fillers like bubble blowers, snowballs and special Christmas food.

There will be plenty of special RuneScape presents available for those players who get involved with a RuneScape-wide game of Pass-the-Parcel. In this Christmas variant, you’ll find Santa beards and sacks, and plenty of god-themed accessories for your kennel, including Zaros chew toys and a Guthix flea circus! That’s right, the fleas get re-homed too, and they get to play with high wires, flaming rings and unicycles.

Christmas is a great time of year to enjoy with your friends and family, so we are making some changes to our ‘Refer a Friend’ system, offering you extra rewards when introducing RuneScape to others.

Santa will also be crash landing this month, scattering presents across Gielinor for marauding monsters to pick up. Defeat the creatures, collect the presents and return them to Santa to be rewarded with gifts of your own, with greater prizes for those who find complete sets of certain present types. Yelps will be getting in on the act, so you’ll have an alternative method of gaining presents on the Squeal of Fortune.

Pet Update

The stray dog has had a profound effect on the RuneScape team – so much so that, this month, we’ve been taking a look at the way pets function in the game. We wanted to improve the interactions between master and pet, so we will make a few changes to encourage more players to find a cuddly (or ferocious) friend for Christmas. Most noticeably, we are removing the need to feed or carry your pets, since they will be accessible from the new customisation interface.

To celebrate this fantastic time of year, we’ve filled your plate with wintery weekends and a funky festive aura, which will complement the quest and minigame meat like a tasty sauce. Anyone who signs up for membership over December will be given an aura which, when activated, will add a 50% bonus to XP gained within the next 30 minutes. It also gives you a set of wings themed around snowflakes. In addition, we’re hosting a variety of special weekends over December, giving double boss drops, double XP in certain skills, double Dungeoneering tokens and even a special snowman-themed community event. It’s going to be a great month, so get involved!

TzHaar Grandmaster Quest: ‘The Brink of Extinction’ – Members Only

In this Grandmaster finale to the TzHaar storyline, you’ll be asked to resolve the differences between the Ga’al, TzHaar and TokHaar by using a fiery combination of wits, knowledge and the sheer, unbridled potency of the new combat system. You’ll have to fight your way through waves of vicious foes and burn through tricky puzzles, as you march forward to the ultimate goal – bringing the city back from the brink of extinction. With fantastic graphics, voiced characters and full integration with the EoC, it’s the flaming hot action we’ve all been longing for.

The Brink of Extinction – Grandmaster Quest

The armour and its raw materials are untradeable, and smithing it is no small feat: you’ll need 90 Smithing to complete a full set, and the obsidian shards needed to make it can only be found in one place…

The Fight Cauldron

In the Fight Cauldron you’ll face the full might of the TokHaar, dodging lava and doing battle with everything they can throw at you: from the humble TokHaar-Hur, all the way up to indomitable TokHaar-Ket-Zek.

All enemies you defeat within the Fight Cauldron will drop obsidian shards. If you have the Smithing level necessary, these can be smelted into obsidian bars and smithed into obsidian armour.

The onslaught will continue until you choose to leave or are killed. You won’t lose any of your gear upon death, although you will expend runes if you’re using magic, and anything left on the ground – such as arrows or bolts – will be left behind.

Last, but not least, you’ll have the option to donate TokKul at a coffer near the Fight Cauldron entrance, which will give any obsidian armour a defensive buff during your next session in the Fight Cauldron.

The TokHaar live for battle, so steel yourself and step into the Fight Cauldron for all the combat you can handle, as well as all the obsidian shards you can carry!

Enjoy!

Where to start The Brink of Extinction:

Requirements:

  • Level 80 Defence
  • Level 80 Smithing
  • Level 72 Mining

The crisis in TzHaar City is about to reach breaking point. Ga’al – TzHaar born without the inherited memories of their forebears – were once merely an anomaly, but now they’re the only TzHaar being born from the eggs at the birthing pools. If this continues, the TzHaar race – as we know it – will cease to exist and TzHaar society will collapse. The TzHaar-Mej have a radical solution, but they’ll need you to return to the Elder Kiln – home of the shadowy TokHaar – to enact it.

Fight your way through some of the most complex combat challenges we’ve ever unleashed, making full use of the new system released with the Evolution of Combat, and dig deep into TzHaar lore to solve puzzles on the way. You’ll also find yourself in the middle of a clash of ideals between the TzHaar and the TokHaar, and the solutions on the table involve pain, death or both. It’s up to you – and a rogue Ga’al bearing a particularly painful grudge – to retain the fragile peace between these two ancient races.

This Grandmaster quest contains some of RuneScape’s toughest combat, and the rewards are appropriately prestigious. Along with 100,000 Mining XP, 275,000 XP in the core combat skill of your choice and a TzHaar title, you’ll earn the ability to smith and wear obsidian armour, and will gain access to an all-new solo combat area: the Fight Cauldron.

Obsidian Armour

This mighty new gear looks truly spectacular, and works much like Void Knight armour: the body armour can be paired with melee, range and magic-specific helms, each giving a 10% accuracy bonus in its style. It requires no less than 80 Defence to wear, and the completion of The Brink of Extinction, and its stats are suitably spectacular: equivalent to Torva armour, with additional damage reduction per piece against against creatures within the TzHaar City and its surrounding PvE minigames (the same creatures affected by the TokKul-Zo). However, you’ll take triple damage if you use it against other players, or in any other location. It also degrades, and new pieces must be made once the armour is destroyed. That said, for a run through the Fight Cave or the Fight Kiln, there’s no better gear out there.

Solomon’s General Store: TokHaar Armour

The Brute armour is indeed formidable; cast of obsidian and instantly imposing. Seekers of a most statuesque demeanour should run a keen eye over the Veteran armour; and those wishing to inspire feelings of utter doom in all they encounter should consider the Warlord armour.

A fine addition to any armoury, this trio of expertly forged suits is available right now from my store. Do you have any queries regarding my distinguished boutique? I’m confident you’ll find an answer in the comprehensive FAQ, found here.
